8 Things You Should Know About Naturopathic Medicine vs Traditional Medicine
by Dr. Karenmarie LaConte, ND
1. Naturopathic Doctors spend on average 1.5 hrs at the first office visit and 50 mins at each follow-up visit. Each visit is patient centered, allowing time to gather info about your friends, home, work, & family life & how they impact your life.
Does this surprise you, it shouldn’t, its how we roll!
2. Pharmaceuticals used in western medicine do not treat the root cause of diseases, just the symptoms. Once you take away the pharmaceutical, the diseased state is still present. There is a time and place for certain medications for sure, for example, some heart conditions, type 1 diabetes & uncontrolled hypertension etc… There’s a time and place for all Medicines!
3. Most of the diseases or syndromes patients come to the Doctor for, can be treated with diet and exercise. Patients mostly know this, but are not told what specific diet and what types of exercises are right?
After all, there are so many, it’s not a 1 size fits all or we’d all be in perfect shape, right? Size fabulous! Diet?
Which one is right for you?
● Mediterranean ● Ketogenic ● raw food ● Gluten-free ● Vegan ● Atkins ● Fasting diet ● Paleo ● low carb ● Pescatarian
Exercise? Which one is safe for you?

4. The most common health issues a patient visits a doctor:
● Anxiety ● depression ● controlled hypertension ● fatigue ● fibromyalgia ● high cholesterol
Would it surprise you that these can be efficiently treated naturally, without using Pharmaceuticals? Without risk of side effects..
**For more severe cases of depression, pharmaceuticals are more suitable and holistic treatments can serve as adjunct therapy with a pharmaceutical. Safety First!
5. Naturopathic treatment is centered around each patient individually taking into consideration, lifestyle, how a person process emotionally and physically, it’s not a one size fits all. Did I repeat this? Good, its important!
6. Naturopathic doctors spend more time listening.
Patients often report that they don’t feel heard by their doctor or their symptoms are not taken seriously. I don’t know the specific reasons for this, perhaps not enough patient time in the office, not enough information is given or lack of communication. Either way, it would be nice if the patient felt heard!
7. Most of the pharmaceuticals given, have a long laundry list of side effects far worse than the symptoms they initially wanted treated. Is that OK with you?
8. Go look in your medicine cabinet…Ill wait..
You spend approximately $90 - $110. Monthly on your medicine cabinet. I’m sure I’m missing some. Why not spend the same amount on supplements that can properly treat and cure your condition?
